10K Handicap (+GRAND PRIX PRESENTATIONS): Tuesday 22nd February

February 20, 2011 Leave a comment

To all,

The fifth in the 2010/11 series of 10K Handicap events will take place on Tuesday 22nd February at 7-30pm from The Belper River Gardens …

followed by trophy presentations for the 2010 Harriers Grand Prix top three at ‘The Dev’.

If you’ve not yet run a Handicap time-trial so far this season, then why not give it a go next week? Whether you just want to test your fitness, or you feel you’re ready to revise your 10K PB, come on down and join us at the River Gardens on Tuesday.

For the majority, who have run these time-trials before, I will be setting handicaps based on your best performance from the preceeding 12 months (from February ’10 to January ’11). For anyone who has not run the Handicap before, I will need to know your recent best 10K time (or an estimate if you haven’t run one); I will then set your initial handicap on the night. (Those on estimated handicaps however, will not be eligible for the winners trophy and plaudits!).

Then, it’s back to ‘The Dev’ on Bridge Street after the run, where John will be providing some hearty, good-value food once again. We will take a show of hands before the race to enable Steve to inform his staff back at the pub of numbers for food.

2010 Grand Prix Results

February 4, 2011 Leave a comment
To all,

Following on from my announcement of the provisional standings of the 2010 Club Grand Prix competition at Tuesday’s AGM, I am now be able to confirm the final results.  As I explained at the meeting, the provisional Top 3 listing was ‘hot off the press’ and thus subject to challenge and final scrutiny/confirmation.  (Please see the attachment for full details).

I am therefore delighted to announce that, having since provided verified details of completing a qualifying race in the 10 mile + category, the CHAMPION (for the second time in 3 years!) is…

**************THERESA HEMPSALL****************
with 126 points from all10 categories

Second place goes to the 2009 winner….
**********ANDY ROSE**********
with 90 points from all 10 categories

The third placed athlete… and new to the roll of honour is…
*******LEONARD FOULK*******
with 97 points from 9 categories

Well Done & Many Congratulations to all three!!!

Note that had Len  run a 1 mile race (of which there were eight opportunities last year) he would have completed all ten required categories and overhauled Andy to finish as runner-up! Gemma Irvine and Alex Duthie – in 4th and 5th place respectively – would also have been in the running for the 2nd or 3rd spots had they completed just one more category.

I will be organising for the presentation of the individual awards – including the perpetual ‘Golden Trainer’ trophy - to take place at the Dev on the night of the February 22nd Handicap event.

By way of explanation for those who are relatively new to Belper Harriers… the annual Grand Prix competition – of which this was the seventh edition – is designed to encourage our runners to challenge themselves across a range of disciplines and distances, while entering into healthy competition on a level playing field with their fellow club members.  It also rewards loyalty to Belper Harriers through awarding additional bonus points for representing the club in league and relay competitions etc. (In 2010 nineteen of our runners earned double bonus points by completing a full series of either the BDL cross-country or the BDLsummer league races…. with one – Robert Norman – racking up a complete set of the available bonus points!).

In order to qualify for one of the top three prizes, runners must complete nominated races in ten required categories This can be quite difficult to do, and takes some planning to achieve!

As in previous years, Sam and I will be carrying out a re-grading exercise for all runners who have recorded performances in last year’s Grand Prix. This will ensure that everyone starts off on a level footing in readiness for this year’s competition.  We will also be reviewing last year’s nominated races by category, and will consider additions and deletions based on 2010 participation levels. Once all this has been completed, I will communicate the new grades, along with the full details of this year’s Grand Prix competition, to all members.

To re-iterate my comments from the AGM – I would like to thank Sam Lowry for her hard work in collating and inputting all of the qualifying race results once again this year. Without her much appreciated efforts, keeping the competition going would prove extremely difficult for me!

GRAND PRIX 2009

January 20, 2010 Leave a comment

The results of the Belper Harriers’ 2009 Grand Prix are now available, having been checked and finalised by Sam Lowry last week. Please click here to access the spreadsheet on the Grand Prix tab in the Results section of this website.

I am delighted to announce the three prize winners, as follows…

1st place: ANDY ROSE                194 points
2nd place: ANDY FOOKES         178 points
3rd place: SIMON HACKETT    134 points

Many congratulations and well done to all!!

All three athletes have made substantial improvements during 2009; benefitting not only from more structured training, but also from greater competitiveness, improved focus and stronger determination. Having joined the club in late 2008, Andy Rose and Andy Fookes have made dramatic steps forward, and have certainly realised their potential during the past year. Simon Hackett has made an exceptional comeback following a serious knee injury. Incredibly, Simon had previously claimed one of the prizes in the 2008 competition – finishing in 2nd place last time around (with 83 points)!

The annual Grand Prix competition of which this was the sixth edition is designed to encourage our runners to challenge themselves across a range of disciplines and distances, while entering into healthy competition on a level playing field with their fellow club members. It also rewards loyalty to Belper Harriers through awarding additional bonus points for representing the club in league and relay competitions etc.

In order to qualify for one of the top three prizes, runners had to complete nominated races in ten required categories This can be quite difficult to do, and takes some planning to achieve! For example, you will see from the final standings (see the ‘League Table 2009’ tab on the spreadsheet) that Matt Conroy ended the year with the third highest number of points, but had only scored in eight categories; thus leaving third place open to Simon, who had ensured completion of all ten! Krish Mahadevan (on nine events) might also have been in with a look-in had he completed just one more qualifying race last year!

It’s also worth pointing out the effect that bonus points can have… while runner-up, Andy Fookes, scored the highest number of race points, winner Andy Rose eclipsed Andy’s overall score through accumulating a whopping 44 bonus points during the year. This included two 10 point ‘double-bonuses’ awarded for completing all five cross-country league and summer league races; a feat also achieved by two other runners this year – Steve Meath and Rob Norman. (Thanks for your superb support for the club guys!)

As in previous years, I will be carrying out the re-grading exercise for all runners who have recorded performances in last year’s Grand Prix. This will ensure that everyone starts off on a level footing in readiness for this year’s competition. Sam and I will also be reviewing last year’s nominated races by category, and will consider additions and deletions based on 2009 participation levels. Once all this has been completed, I will communicate the new grades, along with the full details of this year’s Grand Prix competition, to all members.

Trophies (including the famous ‘Golden Trainer’) will be presented to all three winners at the Belper Harriers AGM on February 2nd. (Speeches are optional!!)

I would like to thank Sam Lowry for her sterling work in collating and inputting all of the qualifying race results once again this year. Without her much appreciated efforts, keeping the competition going would be extremely difficult!
