Yes, the next Belper Harriers Summer (Pub) Specials is on next Tuesday folks and will be based around the Red Lion in Birchover.
Birchover is about 30-40 mins up the A6 and you can get there either by Darley Dale or turning left about a mile after Rowsley, both ways are as fast as each other, so you decide which way to go.
If you’re not sure, a car will leave the Leisure Centre at 640pm.
Birchover is one main street, so you can’t get lost. Park anywhere down the main street, but please park sensibly as there are houses all down the main street !
Run starts 730pm from Outside the Red Lion in Birchover. Andy Basey is coordinating. Chips and Sandwiches after.
As per normal. 630 at Triangle and/or 730 Devonshire. Both with some hill bursts regrouping at top so all welcome!
Personal Bests at Local Races
Last weekend saw a number of our runners in action in two tough half-marathons and a marathon. On the Saturday it was the White Peak Marathon and Half-Marathon on the High Peak Trail.
In the marathon, Andy Basey had a great day, recording a personal best of 3hrs 14mins 17secs to finish 14th in the race. Jim Naismith was another Harrier in the race finishing in 4hr 16mins 22secs to finish 123rd out of a field of 180 finishers.
The half-marathon saw Simon Swanborough, Ian Hays and Chris Jackson all recording personal bests. Simon running a half-marathon for the first time finished in the excellent time of 1hr 30mins 28secs in 31st place. Just three places later, Ian Hays finished right on 1hr 31mins to record a personal best. A little further down in 86th position Chris Jackson finished in 1hr 45min 13secs and yes another personal best.
Eyam Half-Marathon
As you would expect for a race around this part of Derbyshire, there would be plenty of hills on the route but this did not deter Steph Ilsley and Rob Pearce from taking on this tough race. Steph finished 52nd and first female over 45 in a time of 1hr 38mins 2secs while Rob who is running his best since joining the club recorded a time of 1hr 51mins. This race attracted 407 runners and could become more popular as a couple of half-marathons have gone to the wall in neighbouring Nottinghamshire.
Well done to all the runners who ran in more moderate temperatures before the warm weather arrived this week.
On a warm evening at Middleton Top, Wirksworth where the Tunnels and Trails 10k was held, Ron Ilsley finished 6th in a time of 40mins 43secs while Steph Ilsley finished 22nd in 45mins 42secs. Unfortunately they were the only runners from the club in the race where all the profits go to charity.
Hairy Helmet 4-Stage Relays
The second year of this event will take place on Friday June 15th at 7pm from Darley Abbey Cricket Club in Darley Park. Last year the club had a number of teams in this race and those who took part returned very positive views about the event. Each leg is of 2 miles and for those interested in running, email or see me at training, so that we can get the teams sorted before the closing date. At the end of the race there is a free pint of real ale or an alternative drink, all for £3 per runner. For more information see the website article.
Sunday Morning Run
This Sunday May 27th at 9.30am Steve Meath has arranged a run over part of the Rugby Rover course. For those who are interested, meet in the Devonshire car park, for approximately an hour to an hour and a quarters running.
Thanks
It was great to see so many members at training last Tuesday for the new club photograph. I am sure it will be an asset to the website and for those who did not make it on time or could not make Tuesday; we will try and take more individual photographs at the forthcoming races.
Once again thanks to Gavin and Tim Hollings for their efforts in the arranging and taking of the photographs.

All the Club Diary (on the menu along the top of the club home page) has now been updated.
Andy Rose has kindly supplied several local races which may be of interest over the coming months, across road, trail and fell.
Also you may notice that there’s a lot of local midweek fell races – typically within 45mins drive and typically <45 mins duration.
Have a look through and see if there’s anything there which takes your fancy.
Updates may not go on the website though – we may do some more informal stuff via the Facebook page (there’s a hint to join our Facebook Group if you haven’t already !)

Message from Simon "…impromptu beer starting at the dead poets on sat about 8.30pm moving to the white heart and then black bulls head. Wetting Karl’s baby’s head. Partners invited. It is not a formal do just a beer or 3 for who ever has a spare night free"
All welcome!
All,We have now got 2 leaders for June’s special – thanks for volunteering Tim.
JULY 10th SPECIAL – Rob Pearce has kindly stepped forward but seeing as he already does lots of club duties and is already leading another special later in the year, COULD 2 OTHER PEOPLE PLEASE HELP ? Other people have also stepped forward but again, these are people who are already giving up a lot of time for the club and leading other things.
No leaders, no special !
Drop an email to alanbill99 at yahoo dot com pretty quickly – thanks
Tough Race at Teversal
A journey into the next county on a Tuesday night with unreliable weather on a tough course is not something to get too excited about but thirty-eight Harriers made the start line at Teversal and produced some outstanding individual performances. The rain held off, the sun came out and conditions were excellent for an evening race.
Unfortunately space does not permit me to publish all of the many performances that merit publication but a number still have to be mentioned. Our first finisher was Tim Hollings who produced an excellent run to finish fifth. Tim has improved rapidly since he joined the Harriers, producing his highest place finish to date. Yet again we had runners making their debut for the club, Alan McKay and Myles Mourby. Myles who is only fifteen, along with our two other junior men, Sam Horton and Jack Dakin had tremendous runs and they all should be well pleased with their performances. The standard in these races has improved immensely, making the competition a lot more competitive although the number of runners overall was down to 270 compared to the 300 who ran at the Rugby Club. On the evening the men finished in sixth position, the ladies in sixth and overall the team was sixth and after two races the club is standing at fifth in the men’s, seventh in the ladies and sixth in the overall team effort [see post further below for results].
There are still three more races in the road race series, so if we keep turning up and giving it our best effort I am sure we will move up the team positions.
Well done to all who ran and let’s go for another great turnout at Shipley Park Visitors Centre on Tuesday June 12th at 7.30pm. See you on the start line.
Recent Local Races
There has been a number of Harriers who have been in action in local races over the past few weeks. Chris Jackson had a good run in the Derwent Dambusters 10 mile race around the Derwent and Howden reservoirs. Over a mixture of tracks and tarmac, Chris recorded a time of 1hr 22mins. The evening following the first BDL race Jack Dakin went out and ran the Derby Midweek 5k race, producing a personal best of 18mins 36secs.
A new local race took place organised by Lea Primary School over a 10k course. It was all road but with very little traffic and some outstanding views. Craig Allen and Malcolm Weir both had a run out in this event which hopefully next year will see more runners including some more from the Harriers. Not quite so local was the Kendall 10k where Shaun Bott put in an excellent performance, to finish sixth, in a time of 37mins 29secs finishing just 80 seconds behind the winner.
Club Photograph
Next Tuesday evening before training we will be taking a club photograph. It would be great to have as many members on it as possible, so even if you have not been down recently or are injured come and join the club picture. Remember to bring and wear the club vest.
Thanks Malc

BELPER HARRIERS TEAMS REQUIRED!!
On June 15th 2012 Derwent Runners will be staging their event, The Hairy Helmet Relay, from Darley Abbey Cricket Clubin Darley Park at 7pm.
For those who haven’t heard of this race before it is a 4 stage relay with each leg just over 2 miles in distance which takes in a circuit of Derby’s best park. Through sponsorship from local businesses this year we have been able to donate the entire profits from your entries to Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People.
The race entry is £3 per team member, your prize for taking part is a pint from a choice of one of the leading local breweries these being either Derventio, Dancing Duck or Mr Grundy’s.
Afterwards there will the chance to sample the other beers on offer, food and some music.
It would be great if you could take a couple of minutes to look at the website
Last year at our first running of this event we had 88 teams this year we are aiming for 125 and if we reach our target with your entries it means that you will raise £1500 for Rainbows.
