The second 10K Handicap of the 20010/11 season was attended by a sizeable contingent of Harriers on Tuesday evening. There were 43 present in total this month, including the helpers. 34 ran in the event (although two DNF’s aren’t shown on the attached results) and 5 others went for an untimed run along the course.
Yet again, a number of PB’s were set this month; with seven runners recording new personal bests for the River Gardens course. These ranged from Neil Wilson’s 1:38 mins. improvement; through to Chris Jackson’s and Jack Dakin’s revisions of 46 seconds and 43 seconds respectively, and three others who shaved a few seconds off their previous marks. In addition, although Len Foulk’s time was on a par with his fastest Handicap time recorded at Coxbench last year, it was significantly quicker than his previous River Gardens fastest from 2008. To add to those performances, three other competitors were just a few seconds shy of also recording a new PB.
Having come back to displaying close to his previous best form, the race winner on the night was SIMON MERWOOD in 36:50, which was just 20 seconds shy of his PB from February 2008… and third fastest on the night. (The first three runners over the line ran off estimated or adjusted handicaps). Simon collected the sought after Harriers Handicap trophy to display at home for the next month.
Fastest over the 10K course was GORDON IRVINE, in his first Handicap outing since setting the course record of 34.06 in January. His very swift 34.42 now gives hin the two fastest times ever recorded on the A6 course! THERESA HEMPSALL was, once again, the fastest of the ladies – in a time of 43.37. It was certainly a very competitive race at the sharp end this month – with EIGHT runners recording SUB-40 minute 10K times!!
It was also encouraging to see several more new runners joining us for the November Handicap (five in total) as well as two returners – Dawn Bradshaw (nee Repton) and Ben O’Connell (who recorded the second quickest time on the night of 36.54).
Last but not least – thanks very much to Andy Fookes and Rose Norman for their assistance at the finish line and to Rose and Ron for marshalling at the halfway turn. Thanks also to Steve and the staff at the Dev for the great value hot food laid on after the race.
The next Handicap will be on Tuesday December 7th.
