BDL Race 2: Chaddesden Park – ” An improved peformance moves The Harriers up to Fourth place”
A relatively small contingent of twenty-three Belper Harriers contested yesterday’s second fixture in the BDL series at Chaddesden Park; taking on the additional daunting challenge of negotiating four stream crossings during the 4.5 mile race. Up against a very strong showing from Heanor, our men’s team did exceptionally well to finish in 2nd place (pipping Sutton by just 4 place points). Our ladies team once again secured 5th place on the score sheet. The resulting combined score placed Belper Harriers a creditable 4th place on the day and moved the team up from 5th to 4th in the standings after two races.
Of the seven names gracing the man’s team scoresheet, only one (Simon Merwood) had contested the previous race at Shipley Park! GORDON IRVINE produced a fine performance to finish in 2nd place – and could have had a chance to take the win, had he not lost his footing in the final stages of the race! BEN O’CONNELL, who has recently returned to the club after an absence of several years, also finished inside the top ten – in 9th place – closely followed by the ‘back to form’ SIMON MERWOOD in 11th. It was good to see TOM MOULDER back – another of our top scoring runners from previous seasons – who along with MARK RICHES, GEOFF LOWRY and ROB NORMAN completed the scoring team.
In the ladies race, the ever-consistent THERESA HEMPSALL led our team home in 72nd place. In common with the first race, this placed her sixth lady and first in the VL45 category. Just a day after competing in a Duathlon competition, GEMMA IRVINE ran strongly to finish second for the team in 98th place, while ROSEMARY ARRIS-PRATT completed the scoring trio in 163rd place.
After the race, it was on to the presentation ceremony for the 2010 Road Race League prizewinners, where we collected three team trophies and five individual trophies. (As referred to in last week’s pre-race e-mail). All team trophies will now be kept by the winning clubs permanently, rather than being returned and re-presented each season. We are therefore looking at having a trophy cabinet installed in Steve’s pub to display them… so that everyone can view these (and future trophies) when visiting the Dev.
Thanks very much to Rose Norman for recording the finishing positions.
The next BDL race will take place on December 5th at Bramcote Park.
