“Belper Harriers’ teams deliver on the testing Teversal Trail !!”
In common with the opening race of the season at Denby Pottery, Belper Harriers once again secured a well-deserved 2nd place at Teversal Grange on Tuesday evening. A very pleasing turnout of 36 Belper runners (plus two guests) – including a record 11 of our ladies – battled hard to build upon our 2nd placing from Race 1 and consolidated the Harriers’ overall 2nd place in the league table behind leaders Heanor RC. In a reversal of their relative Denby positions, our men’s team claimed third spot on the night, while our ladies team excelled themselves to finish runners-up to Heanor!
It was great to see such an improved turnout on the girls side once again this season… and this is certainly being reflected in the overall results! With all of our fastest ladies in action at Teversal, there was always going to be a battle to make the scoring three. After JO CABORN led the counting three home in 81st place (4th in the ladies race) we then saw the ever-consistent STEPH ILSLEY crossing the line in 93rd position (second VL45) followed by SHARON MELLORS in 122nd place. There were a number of other admirable performances outside of the top three; illustrating the growing strength in depth present amongst the ladies’ ranks. good
On the men’s side, four of those who scored for us at Denby Pottery were again in our top seven this time around. They were joined this time around by three other Harriers, who all placed within the first ten finishers. It was pleasing to witness the return of the talented GORDON IRVINE, who despite returning from a long-standing injury, finished 5th overall in the race. Just one minute behind him came the closely matched BEN O’CONNELL in 9th and DALE ANNABLE in 10th. In a ‘supporting role’ this time – after his top billing for the Harriers last month – ANDY PARKIN again ran strongly to finish in 15th place. Making up the balance of our counting team were: ED JAMES in 26th ; GEOFF LOWRY in 33rd, and TIM HOLLING in 35th place.
The men’s team composition at Teversal just goes to illustrate just how much stronger we have become over the last year… with five of them being relative newcomers to the club – in comparison with those who scored for us last May. It is also worth noting that… if we add up the positions of our next seven runners across the line, that ‘B team’ would have finished 7th out of the 11 clubs!!
In terms of total numbers running at Teversal, the league record of 303 set at Denby last month remains safe (just)… as 295 contested this month’s race!
Once again, there were a handful of new runners making their debuts for the Belper team on Tuesday: Andy Basey (85th) who moved from Notts AC late last year; Gavin Elliot (101st) who has recently joined us from Ripley RC, and Jo Southcott (283rd). In addition we had two runners who ran for us as guests (and therefore don’t appear on the official results table)… new member Ian Hill and the precocious youngster, Sam Horton both performed extremely well for the club. We will certainly look forward to seeing all of them progress as we continue through the summer.
The attached final results spreadsheet includes a few minor changes to the version that I sent out last Wednesday (but none affecting Belper runners). I have added my usual colour-coding to identify the Belper positions.
The next BDL race will be at Shipley Park (Visitor Centre) on Tuesday June 14th.
