Many Positives from the Season
The final race of the Booth Decorators Summer League took place from Shipley Cricket Club on another wet evening. Fortunately running is not affected by the weather and there were 255 runners on the start line including another excellent turnout from the Harriers of 37 runners. The race organised by Heanor Running Club took a route of 5.2 miles around Shipley Park which included a two lap route in the middle making it completely different from previous years.
A tough course but our runners produced some strong performances to finish fifth in the men’s race, eighth in the ladies race and seventh in the overall team. Edward James was the club’s first finisher in 19th place and has ran in four of the five races and produced some accomplished performances. Once again there were a number of excellent runs throughout the team. Shaun Bott followed Edward having a tremendous first season finishing in 22nd position. Krishna Mahedevan having another consistent run finished in 30th place. Two strong contenders for the best runs of the day must go to Jack Dakin and Ron Ilsley who had their highest place finishes in 33rd and 42nd places. The club had two runners making their debuts, Amanda Postle and Steve Groves. Both Amanda and Steve can be well pleased with their races and we look forward to see them improving as they get more races in.
An extremely pleasing aspect of the race was the number of lady runners representing the club. The eleven ladies who ran, easily beat the previous highest number in a race this summer.
Over the five race series the club has had more of a transitional season which reflects in the final standings for the season. The men finished in fifth place, the ladies in seventh position and the team overall finishing fifth. The winners this year being Sutton Athletic Club taking the title away from Heanor in both the ladies and the overall team.
What we have seen this summer has been the improvement of a good number of our runners and others who have become extremely consistent over the five race series. Most of our runners have the ability to improve and we have had a number who have had their first season in the league. , The club had fourteen runners who ran in all five races, Shaun Bott, Krishan Mahedevan, Jack Dakin, Ron Ilsley, Gavin Elliott, Craig Allen, Rob Norman, Theresa Hempsall, Steph Ilsley, Steve Meath, Tim Boursnell, Jonathan Saunders, Andy Nash and Rosemary Arris. There were others who ran in four races and over the five races the club averaged thirty-five runners per race.
Thanks and well done to all the runners who represented the club over the season and remember to support the many local races in the area over the coming weeks.
The cross-country season opens in October and the club will once again be joining both the North Midlands League and the Booth Decorators League.
