On a morning when most of the runners could have found something warmer and drier to do than run a tough muddy five mile cross-country, twenty-five runners from the club were on the start line for the final race of the 2012-13 season.
The setting of Holmebrook Country Park Chesterfield was the longest and toughest of the season but once again produced some strong performances from our runners. Gordon Irvine was our first runner home in ninth place followed by Tim Hollings and Ed James in 19th and 21st places. Dave Cooper ran his first race for the club since rejoining while Sam Horton once again showed what a strong runner he is becoming.
For the ladies Theresa Hempsall was our first finisher having another excellent run while Lelia Armoush who ran second claim for the club will be welcome again in any future races. It was certainly good to see Gemma Irvine back after the birth of her daughter while Jane Armoush, Georgina Bestwick and Rose Norman completed the strong ladies team.
For the record the other fourteen runners were Krishna Mahadevan, Simon Edwards, Andy Rose, Dave Horton, Craig Allen, Rob Norman, Malcolm Weir, Andy Dakin, Rob Pearce, Andy Nash, Gavin Elliott, Amer Armoush, Simon Hackett and Andy Fookes who unfortunately had to withdraw but will hopefully be back in training soon.
It was a good finish by the club but as I have mentioned in earlier reports this season has been stronger with the inclusion of Matlock AC and Derwent Runners. Sunday morning saw the club finish fifth in the team event, sixth in the men’s and fourth in the ladies. The final league standings after the five races saw the men finish fourth, ladies seventh and the team sixth out of the thirteen clubs.
The winners of the BDL X-country league were Long Eaton winning both the team and the ladies titles while Heanor took the men’s title.
Overall it has been a more than satisfactory season for the club and a big thank you must go out to all who have represented the club over the season. There were eight runners who ran in all five races, Georgina Bestwick, Theresa Hempsall, Andy Dakin, Simon Edwards, Gavin Elliott, Simon Hackett, Rob Pearce and Malcolm Weir. A number of others managed four and in my opinion two runners in particular have had outstanding seasons, Theresa Hempsall and Simon Edwards while many others can be well pleased with their efforts.
So once again thank you and we can start looking forward to the summer league road races where we hope more runners will give it a go and come and run for the club.
The first race being at Teversal Grange on Tuesday April 16th.
