2nd BDL Race
The second race of the summer series took place at Ilkeston Rugby Club hosted by Ilkeston Running Club. On a miserable cold and wet night, the runners set off from outside the Rugby Club on a 4.5 mile route which was mainly off-road and taking in parts of the Nutbrook Trail.
Our team of twenty-four runners was well down from the previous race at Teversal and included only two ladies. It was one of those evenings when you just got out there and gave it your best effort even though the rain was heavy at times.
The first finisher for the Harriers was once again Ed James in 20th place while Alan Billington making a rare but hopefully it will become a regular appearance in these races, finished in an impressive 36th position. Once again there were many of the men who ran consistently to help the men’s team to a satisfactory 6th position.
There was once again another runner making his debut for the club in the league, Martin Collins made his first appearance and I am sure will be the first of many.
For the ladies it was just Theresa Hempsall and Rosemary Arris running for the club. After a tremendous turn-out of ladies at Teversal where they were 3rd, this race the ladies finished ninth.
The combined team finished 8th and there were 240 runners who finished the race. After two races the men are 6th, the ladies 6th and the combined team 7th.
Following the race there were the presentations in the club house from the winter cross-country league where Theresa Hempsall deservedly won her age category after having a tremendous season. Tim Hollings also picked up a trophy in the senior men section while still running for the Harriers.
The other Harriers who ran were:
Shaun Bott, Krishna Mahedevan, Sean Ollier, Andy Rose, Simon Edwards, Saul Taylor, Dave Horton, Mark Riches, Rob Norman, Sam Horton, Tim Boursnell, Malcolm Weir, Phil Shaw, Steve Meath, Simon Hackett, Andy Dakin, Rob Pearce, Rob Terry and Len Foulks.
The conditions were not great for the race but as many of us said after the race we were glad we came and made the effort. Finally a thank you to Pete Kemp who was available to do the Harriers recording after the race.
The next race is on Tuesday June 11th at Denby hosted by Belper Harriers so we will need every bit of help and assistance we can get both runners, marshals and timekeepers.
Sunday Morning Run
From this Sunday morning May 19th Steve Meath will be starting a run from the Devonshire on Bridge Street. Set off time is 10.00am and the first run will be approximately 8 miles. It will be a steady pace and everyone is invited. It will be particularly of interest to those runners who will be running the Rugby Rover and any other longer distance race.
Andy Nash and Dan Clark both ran this half-marathon from the soon to be demolished Don Valley Stadium and recorded excellent times. Andy finished in 1hr 47mins 17secs while Dan recorded 1h 47mins 20secs.
21st May Special from the Malt Shovel Wirksworth, organised by Simon Edwards and Simon Hackett. Meet at 7.15 for a prompt 7.30 start (more details to follow shortly!).
