Final BDL Race
The last race of the BDL summer league took place at Shipley Cricket Club, Shipley Park organised by Heanor Running Club. On a lovely sunny evening, the 276 runners set off around the park over a 5.2 mile course of multi-terrain.
Considering it was the height of the holiday season the club still managed to get 29 runners in the race, 30 if you count Sharon Mellors who unfortunately had to withdraw after the first lap with a recurrence of a hamstring injury.
Our first finisher was Matt Lewis running his first BDL race for the club, although Matt has run for the club in the North Midlands Cross-Country League. Matt came in 27th closely followed by Alan Billington in 29th place. The club’s third finisher was Ben Rhodes, just back after a injury layoff to finish in 31st place. Another runner which was good to see back was Krishna Mahadevan who finished in 32nd place.
Right through the Belper team there the usual consistent performances with two other runners making their first appearances for the club. Andy Watson got among the field from the off and finished 82th while Gemma Brady who has joined the club as a second claim runner must have enjoyed her first outing for the club.
Charlotte Dye had another good run to finish first lady for the club while special mention must be made to Sam Horton who is making excellent progress and also to Simon Hackett who is managing his injury problems to get back to the level he was a number of years ago.
Overall it must go down as a good night for the Harriers with the men finishing fifth, the ladies fourth and the combined team fourth. This brought together over the five race series of eleven clubs, Belper Harriers finished fourth in the men’s, third in the ladies and the combined team was fifth.
This was a wonderful result for the ladies to get on to the podium, as the ladies team went into the race in sixth position and came out third. Well done to all the ladies not just for last nights race but over the series.
The other runners at Shipley were: Saul Taylor, Andy Rose, Dave Horton, Craig Allen, Amer Armoush, Rob Norman, Malcolm Weir, Steve Meath, Theresa Hempsall, Tim Boursnell, Dan Clark, Andy Nash, Rob Pearce, Jane Armoush, Geoff Stone, Rachel Clark, Helen Soiris, Rosemary Arris, Rob Terry and Dave Chadwick.
Over the five race series special mention must go to seven of our runners who turned out in all the five races. A special well done to Rosemary Arris, Theresa Hempsall, Andy Rose, Rob Pearce, Tim Boursnell, Simon Hackett and Steve Meath.
Over the summer we have had five excellent races and the response from the membership has been wonderful, so thanks and well done to every member who ran for the club over the series.
We now have a couple of months off before the Cross-Country starts in October with two more Specials before the Autumn.
Next Tuesday August 13th will be at the Leisure Centre depart 7.30pm.
