2nd BDL Cross-Country
Another beautiful Sunday morning for the second race of the series at Chaddesden Park saw the Belper Harriers runners put in a thoroughly professional team performance.
After hearing the news of Steve Meath being suddenly taken ill and rushed to the Royal Derby Hospital the runners went out and produced a magnificent team effort. Unfortunately we were down in numbers, only eighteen Harriers which was considerably less than the clubs around us in the league.
Once again Alex Pilcher won by a ‘country mile’ over the two laps of the park to help bring the men’s team in for a finishing position of third. Our next men’s finisher was Geoff Lowry, good to see Geoff back having a splendid race to finish 19th. Following Geoff was Jack Dakin while Trev Wilson, Simon Edwards, Dave Horton and Craig Allen all ran stormers.
The men were further strengthened by the consistent mid-packers who helped to push many strong runners from the other clubs down the field. Rob Norman, Simon Hackett, Tim Boursnell, Andy Nash, Andy Dakin and Geoff Stone once again turned up and ran well. Our final member of the men’s team was Garry Knights who ran a very creditable race and we hope will see again in more of the cross-countries.
For the ladies we had another surprise with Jo Caborn turning out for us and back to something like her best, finishing first lady for the Harriers in 54th position. The other ladies were Theresa Hempsall, Rosemary Arris and Georgina Bestwick. Their performances earned the ladies team 5th position in a strong field of lady runners.
Overall the combined team came third, an excellent result considering the low turnout of Harriers. There were 235 finishers and a much stronger field than the previous race at Shipley Park.
After the race there was the presentation of trophies from the summer road race league for the various winning clubs and individual age categories. Belper Harriers picked up third place in the ladies league while Theresa Hempsall and Jane Armoush won their respective age groups.
