Tough Finish to BDL Season
Last Sunday morning was the conclusion of the 2013-14 BDL Cross-country series at Holmebrook Valley Country Park Chesterfield.
The weather stayed dry overhead but it was underfoot that the problems arose in the toughest race of the series. The smaller than usual contingent of Belper Harriers battled the conditions, to come out of the season over the five race series in third place, in all three competitions.
Heanor, North Derbyshire and Belper dominated in all three with only Long Eaton of the other teams getting into the top three in the men’s event by knocking North Derbyshire out. Our outstanding runner on Sunday morning was undoubtedly Craig Allen who finished 29th. Craig has steadily improved over the series and I am sure there is even more in the locker.
Our first runner home was Oscar Partridge in fourth place having had three races for the club but unfortunately with working away from the area will unlikely be available for the summer league. Two other runners who should be really pleased with their races are Tim Boursnell and Rob Pearce. It is not just about a few runners you have got to have the back-up squad and for the men this was Geoff Lowry, Trevor Wilson, Simon Edwards, Rob Norman, Malcolm Weir, Andy Nash, Simon Hackett and Dan Clark. For the ladies, Jo Cabon, Theresa Hempsall, Georgina Bestwick, Rachel Clark, Rosemary Arris and Clare Cooper who had to pull out during the race made up the strong ladies team.
Over the five race series we have seen some excellent performances and numbers have been good overall with the Allestree race being only one runner away from equalling our record of 32 runners for a cross-country race. Five runners have ran in all races, Theresa Hempsall, Trevor Wilson, Craig Allen, Tim Boursnell and Andy Nash. Many others have ran in four while I am sure there should be some individual winners from their age categories from within the club.
Well done to all runners from the club who represented the Harriers over the Cross-country season and with a number of new runners joining the club recently, there will be the opportunity to run in the BDL Summer League races starting in April.
