Just back from our very first “Belper Harriers Navigation Practical for Runners”.
We have a race coming up which involves being confident with a map and compass (only if the weather is bad clearly). The girls (&Simon) felt they needed to brush up on skills so we laid this on for them to give them the confidence they needed.
Pub first for refreshing some of the map basics with 90 mins of hands on map experience to work out when to use features, contours or the compass. Nothing overly complicated tho – no bearings were taken – this is for runners!
Then we moved out onto the now dark open moors above Monsal Head to practice what we’d just learnt in a semi tricky environment but all working together, concentrating on finding 10 checkpoints and the best ways of getting from one to the next.
We rounded off with my “Special nav exercise” which turned out to be very tricky and quite amusing … The girls will no doubt tell more…
