Tuesday 2nd July was the 4th race in the Summer BDL – Carsington.
A 4.25 mile “out and back” race along the scenic trail alongside Carsington water saw a fantastic 36 Harriers turn up. It was a warm dusty evening, not the greatest running conditions but an incredible club performance saw us take 2nd position, what an effort! Notable performances from Simon Fisher (9th overall), Shaun Bott (10th overall) Dave Heslop (16th overall, 3rd in age category). First Belper lady was Ruth Keeley. Wendy Amis, Cathy Mitchell and Louise Rowley were all 2nd in age categories. Making his BDL debut was Anthony Beardsmore, who finished in a fantastic 45th overall position, and 9th in age category.
Rewinding a little bit, on Friday 28th June, which saw Nicky Owen take on the Tideswell Fell Race, finishing in a very respectable 38.14.
On Saturday 29th June was the Chrome Hill fell race, any fell race with ‘hill’ in the name is bound to be gruesome, and by the sounds of it, it was. More hot conditions didn’t stop 4 Harriers completing it, well done Ed James, Ashley Flint, Richard Hickling and Helen James. Kudos to Ed James who finished in 9th position overall.
Also on Saturday 29th June was the Lakeland trails Ultra. A series of distances starting from Ambleside, Lake District. Very scenic, very hilly!! A number of Harriers took on the 55km challenge….. incredibly well done to Mark Beighton, Christian Bradshaw, Jo Coates, Clare Cooper, Zoe Clift, . Rob Terry tackled the 23km, well done Rob. Dan Clark and Rachel Clark also completed the 23km, well done both!
Sunday 30th June was the Round Sheffield Run is always hugely popular, and getting an entry is often compared to trying to get tickets to the Glastonbury Festival. It’s a multi-stage 20km trail run through some gorgeous parks and woods. The unorthodox format torpedo’s any previous race training, as each stage is separated by a walk of 5-15 minutes. Just enough time to catch your breath….or seize up completely!
A number of Harriers competed. Myself and Louise Rowley finished 9th in the mixed team category!
A very enjoyable event with a fantastic atmosphere at race HQ and also around the course. Hugely recommended!
Also on 30th June was Little Eaton Leg it – a local scenic run with a few “challenging” hills. Dave Heslop – a regular headline grabber in these news roundups, finished in 5th place overall, fantastic result..! David Horton also grabbed a good finish in 14th place. Andy Dakin came in 61st place.
Friday 5th July was the Colin Potter 10k – a very popular local road race through scenic Darley Park & Darley Abbey. It was a very warm evening, but that man again Dave Heslop finished in a fantastic 4th position, with a time of 38.13. David Horton (42.18), myself (44.47) Paul Romney (45.42) and Jo Coates (51.34) also did the race. Personally I was way off a PB, I found it extremely tough due to the heat. That’s my excuse anyway.
Last but not least, also on Fri 5th was the Ashover Fell Race – increasingly popular (118 runners this year) but always just as tough! Nevertheless, 2 names are never strangers to the top part of the results sections for these local fell races – in 2nd place was Nathan Brickman, and in 3rd was Ed James.
