Summer is the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy the (hopefully) good weather. With the fell racing season in full swing, members have had more than enough races to choose from to keep them busy!
Brassington hill race took our runners on a ‘beautiful tour of the hills around Brassington. Taking place on the 25th July, several Harriers battled the heat & participated. Louise Rowley was 1st lady back! Simon Fisher was 10th overall, closely followed by Andy Marsden who came 13th. Not forgetting all the other harriers who ran superbly on such a hot evening! Sarah Jackson, Jo Coates, David Horton, Chris Clarke & Ant Marchant. Richard Hickling & Andy Nash also made an appearance, & did a great job supporting & cheering on all of our members. Much appreciated!
On the 29th July, Simon Fisher ran the Bonsall Hill race. A short 2 lap course featuring some impressive climbs. Simon Fisher ran at his usual rapid pace and was 1st overall! What a fantastic result to round off July!
1st August saw the return of the Bluebell Fell race ran by David Denton. Despite exploding dams elsewhere, pouring rain, and generally rubbish weather, 5 hard core Harriers braved (and completed) the course! Luckily they escaped the rain (but not the humidity) and collected a fantastic set of results between them. Simon Fisher finished 2nd, with Ed James hot on his heels in 4th. Louise Rowley was 1st FV40 (she just keeps on winning!) David Horton & Chris Clarke completed the line-up. Excellent support again from Richard Hickling, Jasmin Smith & Nathan.
The Salt Cellar fell race took place on the 3rd August. This brutal race was made even more challenging by the toasty weather but that didn’t deter club members from attacking the course and giving it their all. 7 miles of technical terrain starting and finishing at the dam wall of Upper Derwent reservoir. Andy Paisley, Ruth Keeley, Andy Stubbs, Richard Hickling all completed the course. Well done!
Perhaps the most important race of the lot, was the BDL on the 6th August. A tremendous 37 harriers represented the club! This was the last race in the summer league so everyone’s effort really counted. The improvement of the club recently can really be seen by our rise from 7th overall last year to 5th this year! The men finished in 3rd overall and the women in 5th. Consistently high turnout has been key to the club’s success this year. This would not have been possible without all of you Harriers members donning your yellow vests, and to quote our ladies captain Sarah Jackson, ‘running your socks off!’ A huge congratulations to all members. Whether you ran all the races, only one, or supported from the side lines. Let’s keep on working together to do even better next year!
8th August was another successful day for the club at Ricky’s Race, taking place at Darley Bridge. Simon Fisher was 3rd overall with Ed James only a few minutes behind in 10th. Louise Rowley 1st FV40 and 2nd overall, Ruth Keeley was 2nd FSEN and 3rd lady. David Horton was 3rd MV50. Ant Marchant also completed the course, a great effort by everyone.
What a busy summer this is turning out to be! Despite the ever changing weather, one thing’s for certain. It doesn’t seem to be stopping our club members having a great time & doing lots of fabulous running in their yellow vests!
